Internet of things – An uprising and promising technology trend

There is an undeniable fact that technology is growing at a rapid rate nowadays. Especially when the world is suffering through a global pandemic like COVID-19, technology is evolving and changing significantly to meet human’s diverse needs. Therefore, many new inventions in terms of technology have been born and proved their importance in our daily life. Amongst that, there’s a new but interesting term called the Internet of Things.

 1. Internet of things definition

In general terms, the Internet of Things basically means everything is connected to the Internet. “Simply, the Internet of Things is made up of devices – from simple sensors to smartphones and wearables – connected together,” Matthew Evans, the IoT program head at techUK, says.

what is the internet of things

The Internet of Things, or IoT, refers to the billions of physical devices around the world collecting and sharing data through the Internet. It enabled devices, home appliances, cars, and much more to be connected over the Internet thanks to the arrival of super-cheap computer chips and the ubiquity of wireless networks. Now, it is possible to turn anything, from something as small as a pill to something as big as an airplane, into a part of the IoT.

2. How does IoT work?

IoT devices contain sensors and mini-computer processors that act on the data collected by the sensors via machine learning. Machine learning is a type of artificial intelligence that helps computers learn without having to be programmed beforehand by humans. The computers will learn by collecting data from their surroundings about your preferences, then adjust themself accordingly, and this’s what makes IoT devices become “smart.”

Connecting up different objects and adding sensors to them adds a level of digital intelligence to devices. By connecting everything to the Internet, the Internet of Things network enables devices to communicate real-time data without being involved by someone.

3. IoT Applications

It’s not hard to see how and why the IoT is such a hot topic. It certainly opens the door to a lot of intriguing opportunities in terms of technology.

The Internet of Things is an innovation that helps our daily life much easier. We can easily see many IoT applications in little things surrounding us, from traffic, health care, and hospitality to manufacturing, automobile, agriculture, and business management. The Internet of Things allows us to lock our doors remotely if we forget to when we leave for work or preheat our ovens on our way home from work, all while tracking our fitness on our Fitbits.

Many big technology firms, like Google, Apple, and Samsung, have developed and introduced applications of IoT into our daily lives, making devices in our home become “smarter” and creating new concepts such as “smart home,” “smart city,” “smartwatch,” etc.:

  •  Smart bathroom scales can work in tandem with your treadmill and deliver food preparation ideas to your laptop or smartphone.
  • Security devices are able to monitor your home, turn lights on and off as you enter and exit rooms automatically, and stream video so you can check in while you’re away.
  • Smart voice assistants can help to place your usual takeout order on command, making it a breeze to get fresh food delivered to your door.
  • Smartwatch connected to your smartphone, tracking your heart rate, receiving phone calls, and answering messages.

In terms of business, IoT can offer critical benefits such as predictive maintenance, speeding up medical care, improving customer service, etc. It enables better safety, efficiency, and decision-making for businesses as data is collected and analyzed.

The Internet of Things is one of the most popular and promising technology trends. It is forecasted that by the year 2030, around 50 billion IoT devices will be in use around the world, creating a massive web of interconnected devices spanning everything from smartphones to kitchen appliances. The Internet of Things network is contributing to making the world around us smarter and more responsive, merging the digital and physical universes into a united entity.
